The women?s basketball team has two needs to fill in its 2001 recruiting class. Coach Kristy Curry hopes to land a top-notch center and small forward.

One of the nation?s best small forwards just happens to reside in Indiana, and Connersville?s 6-foot-2 Missy Taylor continues to place Purdue extremely high on her list of colleges.

In fact, her list is narrowing and she is nearing a decision, and the Boilermakers continue to remain in good standing.

"Right now I have pretty much decided to stay close to home," Taylor told Gold & Black Illustrated Monday afternoon. "The schools that I?m heavily interested in are Purdue, Indiana and Xavier. I?ve already taken unofficial visits to Purdue and Xavier and I?m going to IU on Wednesday. Hopefully I?ll be able to decide in the next couple of weeks."

Taylor said the list isn?t exclusive to the three schools. But by indicating she?ll remain close to home, it means schools given strong consideration to early such as Stanford, Florida State and Arizona State are now longshots to land Taylor.

The nation?s No. 12 player by All-Star Girls Report, Taylor was able to focus on selecting a college after a busy summer of basketball. Things got started with the Indiana junior all-stars. Other various prestigious events she participated in included the AAU Nationals in Winston-Salem, N.C., Nike Camp in Indianapolis and the Junior Olympics in Virginia Beach.

"My summer went pretty good," Taylor said. "I loved attending Nike Camp. It was my first time there and I got to meet so many different players throughout the country who are going through the same things I?m going through right now. I really enjoyed that."

Taylor was named an AAU All-American after her Dayton Hoopstars squad placed seventh at the 16-and-under national tournament.

"We didn?t go quite as far as I had hoped in nationals, but we still played well and I had a good time," she said.

As a junior at Connersville, Taylor averaged 21.8 points and 9.8 rebounds for the 19-5 Spartans. She possesses an extremely smooth outside shot for a player of her size, and is also a good rebounder.

"Most of the schools have been recruiting me as a three, even though in high school I basically played everywhere," Taylor said. "But I think I need to improve on my ball-handling, so this summer I?ve focused on that as well as driving more and getting contact rather than fading away on my shots.

"My outside shot and my rebounding are my best assets right now. I played the two on the team I played for at nationals, but I was also the leading rebounder. That?s one thing I try to do well because of my height."

Purdue is hoping in the coming weeks Taylor becomes the fourth senior from Indiana to commit to the Boilermakers. They have already received commitments from 6-3 power forward Carol Duncan of Napanee, 5-8 shooting guard Ashley Mays of Indianapolis Warren Central and 5-7 point guard Sharika Webb of Indianapolis Cathedral.
