Should Purdue opt to offer a scholarship to Martinsville's Mandy Geryak, the Boilermaker coaches probably wouldn't need to do much arm-twisting to convince her to accept it.
"I most definitely hope they offer," said Geryak, a 5-foot-7 point guard. "I don't know where I rank on their list, but that'd be great if I could go to Purdue. I'd love to go to Purdue; I've wanted to go to Purdue forever."
With Purdue pursuing national-caliber point guard prospects such as Illinois' Lindsay Richards and Candis Jackson and Texas' Erin Grant, it's uncertain whether or not that offer will come, though Geryak probably helped her chances last weekend, when she named to the all-star team at Purdue's camp.
While Geryak is a savvy point guard who's drawn recruiting interest from Indiana, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Southwest Missouri State and many others in addition to Purdue, one of the questions on her seems to surround her shooting ability. She's working on that this summer.
"I prefer to play point guard (in college), but if I get more meat on me and my shooting improves, I'll try shooting guard," said Geryak, a core member of the 2001 Indiana Junior All-Star team. "I'm on a workout schedule where I'm shooting 1,000 jumpshots a day and it?s been improving. Where ever my coach in college wants me, I'll play. It's their decision."
Geryak has established herself as one of the top rising senior guards in the state under the tutelage of legendary Artesian coach Jan Conner, a Purdue graduate who recently retired after notching more than 400 career wins. She'll be replaced this year by Martinsville assistant coach Vince Cerbone.
"Coach Conner and I were very close and I'm going to miss her so much," Geryak said. "She helped me so much. Coach Devone is a really nice guy though and they're two completely different coaches, so I'm excited about next year."
Purdue has verbal commitments for 2002 from Warren Central guard Ashley Mays and NorthWood forward Carol Duncan.
